ANTHONY LOCK

ANTHONY LOCK

From a young age, Anthony was immersed in the world of skiing. His parents, especially his mother, played a pivotal role in teaching him how to ski while his father worked as a ski instructor. Growing up in Queenstown, NZ, meant that he was constantly surrounded by mountains, and skiing became an integral part of his life. The local mountains, ‘The Remarkables’ and ‘Coronet Peak’, became his favourite places to explore. His passion for skiing ignited when he was introduced to freestyle skiing through magazines and movies his father brought home. This marked a turning point for him; he made a conscious decision to pursue this passion. He spent a lot of time at The Remarkables, particularly in its terrain park, where he'd jump off cliffs, build jumps, and experiment with new tricks, relishing the creative freedom the sport offered.

Anthony's skiing skills have evolved over time. He enjoys various aspects of skiing, from hitting drops at sunrise to freestyling in the park and indulging in leisurely, soulful turns in the afternoon. Despite never taking formal lessons, he honed his skills through self-teaching, utilising trampoline training to enhance his aerial awareness. At 17, he became a certified ski instructor and later joined The Remarkables Snow Sports Academy, coaching freestyle and freeride skiing. He has also participated in numerous competitions throughout the Queenstown and Wanaka regions, with one notable achievement being the 2017 Junior Nationals, where he secured 2nd place in Freeride and 3rd in SlopeStyle. He continues to compete and aims to participate in the Freeride World Tour qualifier with hopes of earning a 4* entry.

While pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Information and Technology, he maintained his dedication to skiing. Every weekend, he travelled back to the mountains from Dunedin, where he studied, to practice and ride with fellow skiers. For Anthony, skiing embodies freedom and self-expression. He finds joy in learning new tricks and challenging himself with different jumps. Competing is both nerve-wracking and motivating, helping him assess his skills against others. in the country. He also enjoys creating ski edits to document his progress and journey.
